QR Codes : Mobile Marketing Strategy

If you’re not yet familiar with QR codes, they’re similar to the barcodes used by retailers to track inventory and price products at the point of sale. The key difference between the two is the amount of data they can hold or share.

Bar codes are linear one-dimensional codes and can only hold up to 20 numerical digits, whereas QR codes are two-dimensional (2D) matrix barcodes that can hold thousands of alphanumeric characters of information. Their ability to hold more information and their ease of use makes them practical for businesses to use in mobile marketing.

When you scan or read a QR code with your iPhone, Android or other camera-enabled Smartphone, you can link to digital content on the web; activate a number of phone functions including email, IM and SMS; and connect the mobile device to a web browser.

Here are just a few ways that you can use QR codes to promote your business

QR codes are the new business cards. Aside from websites, you can place contact details on QR codes too. You don’t have to hand out traditional business cards to everybody because all you need is your mobile phone. All it takes is to scan the QR code. Other than fast and easy, it saves a whole lot of paper. And no one can make an excuse that they lost your business card – unless they have lost their mobile phone.

QR codes rather than commercial slogans. Instead of creating the traditional and sometimes old, catchy phrases, place your your QR codes on shirts, in public places, posters, vehicles etc. It’s a new way of enticing people to your business.

Use a QR code with a Twitter ‘Tweet’ embedded in it.

Embed a QR code into your promotional video on YouTube. The QR code could link to your main website or a promotional offer.

QR codes make Smartphone usage easier. Instead of typing the contact details and URL on the mobile phone’s keypad, scanning it helps make things easier and faster. No misspelling, no wrong URLs and no frills.
